As the cabin doors were on the verge of closing, a last-minute passenger hurriedly entered, desperately searching for the sole available seat—coincidentally, the one right next to me.
Without hesitation, I sprang up to assist her with her bag, ensuring its secure placement in the overhead compartment. Little did I anticipate that this simple act of kindness would spark a profound connection.
As we settled into our seats, she retrieved a petite 2 1/2-inch button pin—a green pin bearing the powerful message: “POWER OF KINDNESS.” Remarkably, it happened to be her last one, and yet she wholeheartedly believed it was destined to be mine. She insisted that the button’s message held a significance that transcended words… and she couldn’t have been more right.
Throughout that one-hour-and-ten-minute flight, I had the privilege of acquainting myself with SuEllen Fried—an extraordinary woman who had dedicated over 20 years to the art of dance therapy and founded Bully Safe USA. At that moment, she was en route to deliver a speech on dignity and prison reform. Our conversation unfolded as an enthralling exchange, captivating both our hearts and minds. My wife, later recounting this encounter to a friend, described how, midway through the flight, SuEllen gently clasped my hand and shared a Yiddish word that encapsulated her perception of our meeting on the plane—Bashert, meaning “Destiny.” I wholeheartedly agreed, feeling an undeniable certainty that our connection was divinely orchestrated. Inspired by SuEllen’s kindness and fervor, I resolved to embrace her cause as my own.
